Ceramics 1
Ceramics 1 is a focus on the handbuilding basics of coil, slab, and pinch.
The video to the above is a combination of ceramics and AP studio art students. The video is an interview of the program to get kids excited about the Visual and Performing arts week (VAPA) This video was put together for by the Television Production class to be featured on our local school broadcast system.
CLASSROOM LESSONS & PROJECTS
Slab Mugs
This project focused on the slab construction methods. Students used rolling pins and guide sticks to create their slab, and then used their own hand and wheel stamps they made to create texture and depth when glazing.
COIL POTS
Here students were asked to construct a cylindrical coil pot with at least 3 bands of decoration built into the construction of the item.
Pinch pots
Students learned the historical tradition of pinching through these small decorated pinch pots. Students began to ask how will the 'form follow the function'? These pieces were glazed with cone 5.
MORE PROJECTS
PRESS MOLDS USING MISHIMA & SGRAFFITO
Here students used hump and slump molds to create bowls and plates. To decorate these bowls they used the techniques of mishima and sgraffito
Living Sculpture
Students at the end of ceramics one are asked to recreate something that is living in the clay medium. They have to question what is the best hand-built construction technique and then problem solve to finish.
Bas Relief 3D postcards
Students were asked to pick a place that has personal significance to them and recreate a postcard advertisement for the location. Historical elements such as bas relief tiles on temples were used in helping describe construction techcniques
